SUSTAINABLE COMPUTING IN SCHOOLS

Have you ever thought about how much energy it takes to send a GIF or an emoji? Do you know where the components of your phone come from and what will happen to them once you have finished with it? What are the environmental impacts of AI? “Digital” is often equated with being “green”, meaning these links between digital technologies and sustainability are often overlooked, including in the classroom

Digital Good is a research project between the Institute for Design Informatics, University of Edinburgh and Ostrero, funded by the ESRC Digital Good Network through the University of Sheffield (grant reference ES/X502352/1). The project investigates whether sustainability is currently taught as part of computing and technology in Scottish schools; maps curricular links between sustainability and computing; and developed the guide below to encourage making these links in relation to the Curriculum for Excellence. Please download the guide to find out more and discover some ideas for linking these themes in the classroom.

Special Thanks:

With many thanks to Dr. Susan Lechelt, Principle Investigator and Lecturer; and Dr. Luis Soares, Co-Investigator and Researcher, from the University of Edinburgh; and Hannah Riordan for her design and illustrations.
